Paradise Lounge
Brand video for a bar on the top floor of the tallest building in Shibuya, Tokyo.
The Shibuya ward is shaped by a dynamic narrative that sees continuous change at a rapid pace, yet its most defining traits remain constant. If you peel back some of the contemporary layers of tech offices and trendy pancake shops, the Shibuya flavor of city grit with a touch of class that took shape throughout the 20th century can be thought of as the core essence.
At the same time that Shibuya found itself and became a symbolic area in Tokyo, bar culture began to take shape and prosper in cities around the world. Underground, dimly lit, somewhat exclusive spaces with drinks poured and records playing that reflect the local taste.
In 2020, Tokyu Corporation opened Shibuya Scramble Square on top of Shibuya Station, now the tallest building in Shibuya. We made the brand release film for the bar that takes up the top floor, Paradise Lounge. The bar aims to become a place for a more diverse demographic, similar to Shibuya as it continues to become more frequented by foreigners.
Paradise Lounge will become a symbol for a turning point of Tokyo in regards to its position in both space (the sky) and time (2020). Bars move from the underground to the sky. Tailored to an international and ever-changing, open community, yet still defined by its classic roots. To convey this, we directed a narrative following a Shibuya girl as she wanders through a mix of classic and contemporary Shibuya, and awaits the retro future that the bar will catalyze.
